What is the age limit for sunbed use?

The minimum age to tan in the UK is 18 and no one under the age of 18 is allowed to enter any tanning room or use any UV tanning equipment.

A salon is fully within its rights to as for ID if someone looks under the age of 18.

How frequently can I use a tanning bed?

The tanning process ranges from person to person and it depends on the type of skin.  Tanning on a regular basis within the safety tanning guidelines will enable you to see results and will prevent your tan from fading.

It is advisable to allow a minimum of 24 hours between tanning sessions and 48 hours for skin type 2.

Do not use any tanning equipment more than once on the same day!

Repeat the tanning session to build up your tan gradually.  It is recommended not to excessed 60 tanning sessions per year.

How long shall I go on a sunbed for?

If this is your first tie on a sunbed, there is no need to rush, since health and safety come first.

It is suggested to have 2 x four minute sessions up to three times per week based on your skin type.

This will eliminate the chances of your skin getting burnt and will help you ti build your tan up gradually.

If you have already built up a base tan or have a darker skin type, you can have 6-8 minute sessions, two of three times per week.

In any case the amount of time spent within a sunbed should vary according to each person’s skin type and should comply with the safety guidelines of tanning.

What is my skin type?

Skin type 1: Sensitive - tendency to burn

Skin type 2: Fair - burns easily, but tans moderately after repeated exposure.

Skin type 3: Medium - rarely burns, tans fairly easily

Skin type 4: Dark - never burns, tans easily

How will my skin type affect my tanning session?

When the skin is exposed to UV rays - either from the sun or a sunbed, it can damage the outer layer of the skin know as the epidermis.  In an effort to protect the skin the body naturally produces more melanin, which Is the pigment that gives skin its colour.  Melanin absorbs the UV radiation, resulting in less damage to the epidermis.

People who naturally produce more melanin are better protected from UV rays.  On the other end of the scale, those with lower melanin levels are more likely to burn in the sun or on a sunbed.

Always follow the recommended tanning time for your skin type.

What is the recommended tanning time for your skin type?

Fair - two to four minutes, gradually upping the minutes after three / four sessions.  Maximum six minutes.

Medium - four to five minutes, gradually upping the minutes after three / four sessions.  Maximum eight minutes.

Dark - six to seven minutes, gradually upping the minutes after three / four sessions.  Maximum ten minutes.

Always follow the recommended tanning times for your skin type.

How long does a sunbed tan last?

The outer layer of the skin, the epidermis, replaces the upper cells every 28-30 days.  It takes 4 weeks for the cells to move to the surface and ‘slough off’.  So this means that your tan can last approximately 2 to 4 weeks after your last session.

What time is the last sunbed session?

The last sunbed session is 15 minutes before we close.  Please see our opening times.

I want my tan to last longer what should I do?

Keeping your skin healthy and moisturised is the number one factor, which enables you to tan quicker and maintain your tan for longer.  After a tanning session, the skin continues to produce melanin for the next 12 hours.  Keeping the skin moisturised during this time is essential.

Do sunbed creams and lotions work?

Yes!  Sunbed creams or tanning lotions are specially designed  products that enhance and accelerate the tanning process.

In sunbed creams you can find ingredients that maintain your skins moisture.  Such ingredients are amino acids like L-Tyrosine, natural oils and many vitamins.  It is widely known that moist skin tans better, since it absorbs a greater percentage of UV light.

On the other hand, tanning without a lotion can cause the skin to dry out.  Dry skin reflects UV light, making the whole tanning process, less effective.

Should I remove my makeup before my sunbed session?

It is preferable to remove all of your make up because some cosmetics can create a barrier layer that blocks the UV rays from penetrating the skin, preventing you from getting optimum tanning results.

This can also lead to uneven tanning or white spots.

What is more, the ingredients of some cosmetics may react to the UV rays and cause adverse effects.

All our tanning rooms come with makeup remover wipes, deodorants and eye protection.
